If you’ve never enjoyed the indulgence of homemade waffles from scratch, then you’re missing out! This is the go-to recipe for waffles, at our house. And, nothing makes a Saturday morning better than a breakfast that starts with these.

Homemade Waffles

For the first time ever, I get answers from both Olivia and Meredith in this section. I’m very excited to hear from both of them on these waffles. But as always, sometimes, we laugh. Sometimes, you laugh.

What would you rate this recipe?

Meredith: 10/10. The waffles are really sweet (with the toppings), and I really liked them.

Olivia: 9/10. I thought they could have been better. They weren’t as buttery as I wanted.

How would you describe the flavors and experience of eating this dish with someone who has never tasted it before?

Meredith: Well, the waffle isn’t sweet by itself. But it’s very sweet with the berries and waffle sauce.

Olivia: I think they are light and fluffy, and they’re a little bit buttery. But, if you let them sit, they get a little less fluffy.

What part of making this dish did you enjoy the most, and why?

Meredith: I got to whisk this one. That is my favorite thing.

Olivia: I don’t think I had a favorite part of this one.

If we made it again, what would you want to do differently next time?

Meredith: Nothing. It was a 10 out of 10 for me.

Olivia: Um, I would want the waffles to have more butter so that they were more buttery. And I would eat them right away so that they are more fluffy.

Dad’s Notes

We use this recipe for perfect waffles, every time we make sweet waffles. One day, I’ll get the girls to love cheddar and green chile waffles, but it is not today. Anyway, Mary absolutely crushes the waffle game. Why keep looking after you’ve found the best?

It’s about as easy a recipe as they come. The only real effort is in whisking the ingredients and then babysitting the waffle iron. Meredith helped on both stages, while Olivia made the waffle sauce.

So, you could say that my master plan of them making me breakfast on the weekends while I rest with my feet up is coming nicely along.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1⅔ cups milk
  • 2 eggs
  • cup butter (melted)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Then, add the milk and eggs and whisk again to combine.
  2. Pour in the melted butter and vanilla and stir just until mostly smooth. Take care not to over-stir the batter (you want some tiny lumps to remain). Turn on the waffle iron and let the batter rest while it heats up.
  3. Pour batter onto the hot waffle iron, and cook according to the manufacturer’s directions. Serve warm!
