Salty peanuts are a brilliant match for the classic striped fall treat in this Candy Corn Trail Mix with crunchy pretzel pieces, soft marshmallows, and just the right amount of chocolate.

If you’ve been following our journey for very long, then you know that Olivia and I are pretty serious about trail mix. We test dozens of different combinations to find the perfect ratio of ingredients for each recipe. And, that’s why we are confident this candy corn trail mix will fit right in with the others, like this dried fruit trail mix.

Candy Corn Trail Mix

This one gets an 8 out of 10. I REALLY like the flavor combos. At first you get the nice crunch of the pretzels and peanuts, and then you get the softness of the marshmallows.

Then, you get the taste of the candy corn. After that, you taste the salty and sweet ingredients together. Last, you start to notice the sweet taste of the chocolate chips. I chose the chocolate chips because we had just used M&Ms in the last trail mix, and I love the way the chocolate is the last thing you taste.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Candy Corn – We use the quintessential fall candy as the star of this trail mix.

Salty Crunch – We chose to use pretzel pieces and peanuts to balance the sweetness of the candy corn.

Chocolate – We decided on semi-sweet chocolate chips to add another layer of sweetness.

Marshmallows – We included some mini marshmallows for their wonderful fluffy texture.

How to Make Candy Corn Trail Mix

Prepping the Ingredients: We break the pretzels into smaller pieces.

Combining the Ingredients: We prefer to use our kitchen scale when measuring the ingredients into a big bowl. This saves us the trouble of washing the measuring cups.

Mixing and Serving: We give the ingredients a toss, then transfer the mix to a serving bowl or airtight storage container.

Dad’s Tip

Just like with our other trail mix recipes, the key to a great mix is balance. With candy corn, marshmallows, and chocolate, the sugars pile up fast. We kept the sweetness from becoming overwhelming by pairing it with salty pretzels and peanuts.

Candy Corn – This trail mix takes one of my least favorite candies, and makes it absolutely irresistible to me. Salty mix-ins make a world of difference.

Match Sizes – I try to keep all the ingredients close to the same size so that they mix together evenly.

Taste First – I sample the ingredient ratios with a test bite before measuring them into the bowl. If anything is not exactly how I want it, then I adapt the mix to my taste.

Make Ahead & Storage

Make Ahead: Trail mix is basically the original meal prep. It’s perfect for mixing ahead of time, so that it’s ready to snack when you are.

Storing: Be sure to store this in an airtight container, so that nothing dries out or loses its desired texture. We have never had leftovers last longer than a week, but it keeps that long, at least.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I swap out ingredients?

When switching ingredients, I focus on the role that ingredient plays. Just swap in something with the same texture and flavor profile.

Can I use raw nuts?

Yes, but you’ll probably want to either add a pinch of salt or adjust the ratio of other ingredients to balance the flavors.

How could I make this trail mix allergy-friendly?

I just change out the nuts for pretzels, cereal, or seeds if I need it nut-free. Be sure to check the labels on the add-ins to make sure they fit your dietary needs.
